Billy Eckstine was a jazz vocalist and band leader of the swing era. He was closely associated with Dizzy Gillespie. His band in the 1940s was the first big band to play bebop and included performers who made significant contributions to jazz, including Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughn. He went on to a successful solo career, where he combined his gorgeous vocals with lush orchestrations.
This is one of Billy’s solo efforts for MGM records, and was a hit for him in the late 1940s. It has a theatrical feel–quite different from the big band recordings of his contemporaries.
