James Mullan
"The Singing Insurance Man"

I dislike having to write this, but James Mullan is another of those musicians whose life story is lost to time. On our recording of his music, he’s labeled as the “The Singing Insurance Man.” There’s a story there that I’d like to know! A couple of his songs — “Let Mr. McGuire Sit Down” and “Arrah, Come in Out of the Rain, Barney McShane” have been reissued on CD. The former is on “From Galway to Dublin: Early Recordings of Traditional Irish Music,” issued by Rounder Records, and the latter is on “Farewell to Ireland, Vol. 1” on the Proper label and “Wheels of the World, Vol. 1” on the Yazoo label. Be sure to listen to these tunes. James has a sweet and authentic delivery.
