Cab Calloway

Cab Calloway

Cab Calloway, 1907-1994

Cab Calloway was a singer, showman, dancer, actor and band leader. He led one of the most popular big bands (Cab Calloway and his Orchestra) in the United States in the late 1930s and 1940s. Jazz luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie and Doc Cheatham played with him. He’s best known for his song “Minnie the Moocher,” and received a “Grammy Hall of Fame” award in 1990 for the song. He appeared in movies, television (including the Ed Sullivan Show on March 19, 1967) and on Broadway. In 1993, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
