Benny Goodman

Benny Goodman

Jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, 1909-1986

Benny Goodman. It’s hard to know what to say about the “King of Swing.” I first heard him on the clarinet at Capitol Drug Store in Annapolis, Maryland, in the 1970s. My boss and the store’s owner and pharmacist, Buddy Levy, loved jazz, and especially Benny Goodman. Benny’s recording career began nearly 50 years earlier, in 1926, with the Ben Pollack Orchestra. He first recorded under his own name in 1928. The recordings below span the first 40 years of his career, from the 1920s through the 1950s. For a detailed description of his long and influential career, see Wikipedia.
